Students, Teachers Will Experience 3D Printing at RCBI This Summer
Students and teachers will explore 3D printing this summer at the Robert C. Byrd Institute for Advanced Flexible Manufacturing (RCBI) during separate events that target their particular interests.
For students, RCBI offers week-long camps, while educators can enroll in a two-week course in 3D printing. During both events, participants have the opportunities to become “makers” and create things on a 3D printer.
Presented in partnership with Marshall University, the 3D Printing camps introduce young people to the opportunities in advanced manufacturing. Throughout the week, campers use computer-aided design (CAD) software and precision machinery to customize a design, 3D-print it, then perform final assembly. The campers also tour local manufacturing facilities and explore entrepreneurship under the guidance of experienced mentors.
RCBI’s Huntington camp is June 22 – 26 and the one in Bridgeport is July 13 -17, with each running daily from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, visit www.rcbi.org/3DPCamp or call 800.469.RCBI (7224). The cost is $100, which includes lunch each day.
RCBI is also rolling out a course for teachers who want to learn more about 3D printing. The hands-on course — presented with the June Harless Center at Marshall University — is based on a curriculum developed by Stratasys, a leading manufacturer of 3D Printers and support materials.
The 10-day course for educators will run each weekday June 8 – 19 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the RCBI Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center, 1050 Fourth Ave., Huntington. The syllabus and course objectives are available online at www.rcbi.org/3DPforEducators, where you also can register.
Teachers may qualify for three graduate credits and/or continuing education units (CEUs).
